3.5 Feb. 18

In this week's picture we can view the very beautiful and very large Carina Nebula. Taken in Chile and with a slightly specialized camera, this picture captures non-polluted light from the galaxy and one of its largest star forming region, and main subject matter, the Carina Nebula.  Being 7500 light years away and a mere 300 light years across, the gemstone of the southern sky is a not just a star forming region but a supernova factory. the stars made here are so massive that scientist predict that supernovas go off regularly, causing even more star formation. Soon, the European Extremely Large Telescope will have a first class view of this Nebula and all it has to offer.
